Before there was history, there was a primordial longing — a collective breath blowing across the water, calling Hawaiʻi from beneath the sea, whispering “I love this place. I want to live here.” That longing outlasted empires, survived erasure, endured a century of quiet war waged through suppression of language, banning of hula and theft of land. This is not the Hawaiʻi from postcards. “Kūpuna ʻĀina” does not try to explain what is Hawaiʻi; it listens to its heartbeat. Through the voices of kūpuna (elders), modern warriors, cultural practitioners and men finding healing in their connection to the land, the film honors a profound remembering of ancestral ways. It is a journey of reclaiming ancient rhythms, revitalizing language and embracing the sacred duty — the kuleana — to secure a living future for generations to come. Here, historical pain is alchemized into power. Not despite the wound. Through it. This is the Hawaiʻi chapter of a 13-part series branching from acclaimed documentary “The Eternal Song,” which follows indigenous voices from around the world, calling on the community to witness deep, ongoing scars of colonization on lands and peoples, as well as healing that comes through ancestral wisdom. Important work of Humanity Hale — a Hawai‘i Island nonprofit building brighter futures for youth through trauma-informed support programs, life skills and healing — is also spotlighted through the journey.
